Can Tinnitus be prevented?

Do not place objects in your ear such as cotton swabs (Q-tips) to clean your ear. This can cause a wax impaction against your eardrum which can cause tinnitus. Take blood pressure medicines and other prescribed medications as they are ordered by your doctor.

Ear Infections and Its Anatomy

Anatomy of an Inner Ear Infection

The Eustachian tube is a canal that connects the middle ear to the throat. It is lined with mucus, just like the nose and throat; it helps clear fluid out of the middle ear and into the nasal passages. Cold, flu, and allergies can irritate the Eustachian tube and cause the lining of this passageway to become swollen.

What causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus can arise in any of the following areas: the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear, or by abnormailities in the brain. Some tinnitus or head noise is normal. If one goes into a sound proof booth and normal outside noise is diminished, one becomes aware of these normal sounds. We are usually not aware of these normal body sounds, because outside noise masks them.

Is there anything to do to lessen intensity of the Tinnitus?

It is important to realize that the hearing system is one of the most delicate and sensitive mechanisms in the body. Since it is a part of the general nervous system, it is sensitive, to some degree, by anything that affects the overall health of the individual (both physical and psychological). Therefore, in order to lessen the intensity of tinnitus, it is advisable to make every effort to:

How is Tinnitus evaluated?

A medical history, physical examination, and a series of special tests can help determine precisely where the Tinnitus is originating. It is helpful for the doctor to know if the tinnitus is constant, intermittent or pulsating (synchronous with the heart beat), or is it associated with hearing loss or loss of balance (vertigo). All patients with persisting unexplained tinnitus need a hearing test (audiogram). Patterns of hearing loss may lead the doctor to the diagnosis.

What can cause Tinnitus in young children?

I've had what I now recognise to be very mild Tinnitus for as long as I can remember, at least since the age of 6. It's never been a problem and until I started reading about it I wrote it off as normal.
But now I'm wondering where it could have come from. I can't recall ever being exposed to extreme noise levels. Could it have just come from normal background noise?

Does anyone know of someone or have themselves had noise-induced Tinnitus and have it suddenly gone?

I've had noise-induced Tinnitus since March. If you know or have yourself experienced the sound suddenly going away, please let me know. I'd also like to hear other peoples experiences with tinnitus, as it can be quite frustrating a lot of times.

How serious can the symptoms of Tinnitus get, and when should I start to worry?

I've suffered from Tinnitus for more than ten years now, but in the last few years symptoms have really started to take a turn for the worse and now the condition has become quite painful physically. I experience constant earaches, headaches, soreness/tingling, and occasional vertigo (though no insomnia). Anyone know of any alternative remedies (e.g. acupuncture, herbal medicines, etc.,) that may help?

Additional Details
Let me elaborate a bit....I know what caused my tinnitus: it was my years and years of constant headphone use (something which has made me feel like a bit of a spokesperson for people who use I-pods).

There's no question about that because I've never had any tumors and I don't suffer Meniere's Disease.

I think the original symptoms (while somewhat alarming) didn't really bother me. Only since the physical pain started has this really started to make life difficult.

Tinnitus is the medical term for "hearing" noises in your ears when there is no outside source of the sounds.

Tinnitus is supposed to be just head noises, but what happens if it is accompanied by pain?

I've suffered from tinnitus for 10+ years now and the noises themselves have never been too much of a nuisance, but in recent months I've started to experience significant pain, soreness, itching, tingling, and throbbing in my ears, along with headaches, jaw pain and vertigo. I've also been a severe teeth-grinder and wear a protective mouthguard at night. Should I be worried? And should I even bother wasting money to see a ENT if they're basically just going to give me a hearing test and tell me to learn to live with it?

Tinnitus ???

Ok I am 14 years old, and today I have been diagnosed with tinnitus. I do listen to music loud and play guitar loud, but that will have t o change ... OK on with the story, this has been going on since Saturday. My doctor has given me an anti-inflammatory medicine. And he said if that doesn't work he would refer me to a specialist. Is there a chance my tinnitus can go away, because on this one medical site I read that the ringing can decrease volume wise, or be elimentated. Is it possible my tinnitus can "go away" ...?
